Our Open Source Commitment

Hey! I see you're wondering about our commitment to open source. Glad you're here :)

At the moment there are a few things we're already doing and a few things we've decided to do but haven't gotten to yet. Let me break this down, starting with why we believe in open source in today's world.

Why We Do This

For us, the goal of this website is to be as useful as it can be. It started as a project for ourselves more than a year ago. And since we're hobbyists ourselves, I know I'd like to at least be able to self-host it. It gives me more trust in a service I use :) So we'll pursue that goal and better align with the community of sharing that 3D printing has been since its inception.

But we're not there yet! Here's what we're doing so far ~

What We're Doing

We base the data for MyFilamentList on an open source project that we're helping maintain, owned by Prusa3D. They've made a filament database available on GitHub for everyone to use. We're both maintaining and sharing data from anything we get on MFL. Of course we have extra data like reviews, purchase links, and we use a different format to make it easier to code the base and add features. But other than that, we import and base our data from that project, as well as contribute back to it.

We've also open sourced the translations for the data :) You can find that here.

That's about it as to what we're doing right now.

What We're Going To Do

We want to open source a few things. The architecture of our website allows for easily self-hosting an inventory management site and using the same frontend against it. We'll be looking into that soon :)

It needs a bit more work and we'd like to first focus on getting the wheels spinning on this project. But for us, the goal has always been to be as helpful as we can to the community. That includes the commitment and transparency that comes with open source.

You can look forward to a full release for this in maybe early-mid 2026 if things go the way we'd like. We'd love to hear from you if this is important to you though! It could help us prioritize our roadmap :)

The full scope of what will be made available is still something I'm thinking about. It will probably end up being the full stack, or at least most if not all of it. Because why not. But I have to get the house in order first—with the launch and the data, there's a lot of work still pending. So give us some time!

We'll expand this page as we do more, and we'd love to take the chance to highlight cool similar projects. Stay tuned!
